A friend & I met in a support group led by a therapist associated with Mental Health America in another county. The therapist is helping us start a DBSA chapter in the county where we live. Our first meeting will be in Oct.

My first suicide attempt was at age 15 (many more to follow & alcohol abuse, cocaine, speed, rash & irrational behaviors, huge mood swings, etc.) & misdiagnosis & unhelpful treatments (so many pills & therapists) even though my mother was bipolar & committed suicide. That should have been a clue to the docs, but in all fairness, I was only going to my Family Physician & did not go to a specialist such as a psychiatrist until I was seeing an internal medicine doctor & she recognized that I was in a mixed state & told me she didn't think I had "regular" depression but "bipolar" started me on Depakote & sent me to a psychiatrist. I was 45!!

It took a year of trial & error to get the right combo of meds to keep me stable (5 years of stability before a relapse). My family was amazed at the difference in me. I hope our support group will be successful.
